High temps prompt Third Avenue Bridge to malfunction and close, snarling traffic

The Third Avenue Bridge between the Bronx to Manhattan was stuck in an open position Monday due to overheating, officials said.

After opening to let a ship sail down the Harlem River around 2:45 p.m., the swing bridge was unable to shut due to heat expansion of steel, they explained.

Members of the FDNY and the Department of Transportation were called to the 126-year-old bridge to assist in cooling the steel down.

The bridge around 6:30 p.m., officials said.

Monday marked the in New York City, with temperatures hitting 95 degrees in Central Park, according to the National Weather Service.

New York City is through Wednesday, according to the agency.
